CONNECTICUT HISTORY OF BUTTON MAKING

BICENTENNIAL PROJECT

of the

CONNECTICUT STATE BUTTON SOCIETY

1976

Founded in 1942, our original members were mostly women with active minds and time on their hands. The men were off to war and the women left behind found shared interests in the hobby of collecting and researching information about buttons.

In 1976, a second generation of collectors, both men and women, followed in the spirit of learning to create the CONNECTICUT HISTORY OF BUTTON MAKING as a project during our country's Bicentennial. Poring over city directories, old journals, maps, and land records, our members uncovered primary source materials to create this document about the early days of button manufacturing in the state of Connecticut.

With respect to our founders and to all who have benefitted from the hobby of button collecting, we are offering this work to learn from and enjoy.
